2 wonderful wildlife experiences in the South African bushes.

I had the opportunity to be part of the first session of the South African wildlife conservation project.


Internship 17/02/19 - 03/03/19

Day 1 : 

Tele-anesthesia, plan anti-parasitic plans and blood samples on 2 Nyalas and a Sable Antilop. Darting courses on target and on real animal. Ending the day with a night safari !! 

Day 2 : 

Relocalisation of 12 buffaloes using a boma. Infections diseases tested, Tele-anesthesia, anesthesia management, blood samples and tuberculosis tests. Afternoon daring on target from 20 metre.

Day 3: 
Tele-anesthesia on sable antilip and bufflaos for : check-ups, horns measurements, deworming plans, rectal examinations and gestation diagnosis.
Afternoon ticks bone diseases lecture
Anti-poaching patrols experience to protect the rhinos
Darting on target and animals
Exceptional Night Safari with rhinos and elephants 
 Nice suprise on the way home to the reserve camp ; We were facing 2 elephants drinking 10 meter away from the house.
Amazing show !!😍

Day 4 : 

Coprology from différents sable antilop and buffaloes group for herd parasitism management
Darting from bakki ( the african van) driving !!! 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

Day 5: 

Tuberculosis test reaction evaluation from the buffaloes previsouly inculated in boma.  

Afternoon pregancy diagnosis, rectal palpation and intra-rectal probe on sables.

 Tele-anesthesia of a top 10 reproduction male sable with one of the longest and wonderful horns of South Africa. Proud of PP Mare farm 👍

Weekend at the Kruger park . Overnight at Letaba camps.

Wonderful moments  meeting of numerous of elephants and other species. We also visited the elephant museum and memorable viewpoints. Evening braai !!


Second week of the internship 


Morning visit of the reserve and a nice viewpoint. 

Autopsy of an Impala.

Afternoon visit of the rehabilitation centre ; Moholoholo. 

Unfortunately the visit had to be shortened because of a crazy rain!! 😵

Day 9 : 

 Tele-anesthesias of 4 sables. 

Pregnancy diagnosis, blood samples and deworming. Relocation of 3 sables. 

Afternoon darting, Small dive in the water hall in the middle of the private reserve Selati 😍


Day 10:
 Panorama road with its magnificent viewpoints;
The three rondavels
The Bourk's luck Potholes with its view on the Blyde River Canyon.
The god's window.
Stop at the Pothluck boskombuis restaurant for a small potje overlooking the river.
Afternoon hike with an improvised descent to the Strydon waterfall passing through ancestral ladders and a very slippery cave !!!
End of the day in front of our usual little braai !! As always lekker lekker

Day 11:  Rhinos day😍. 
Morning safari meeting a black rhino family ; the mother and her two offspring
The mother didn't really like our presence! 
We also met white rhinos but  they were much more shy. 
 Visit of a cheetas reproduction farm.
  Afternoon tele-anesthesia on Nyalas 
Belgium creps evening : with the special meat crep !!  😋. 
Ending the day with some more rhinos next to the room ! 

Day 12: 
Darting from an helicopter for the 2 students !! 
Darting sables for deworming
Afternoon safari in the reserve and evening braai. 
What an amazing journey ❤️

Day13 : 

Day safari and visit of the lion farm

Braai and potje.

Every good thing have an end !!
  These 2 internship weeks were really rewarding !!
